Keeping with the structure of last year, Rowhedge Table Tennis Club was the destination for the Essex Mens InterLeague Division 1 matches with teams from Colchester, Braintree, Harlow and two teams from the Clacton league. Disappointingly last years champions Ilford failed to field a team at all and with no-one arriving from that league they were scratched from the event.
Colchester arrived to the event with a strong squad of six players intent on regaining the title they last won in 2001. They were led by Colchesters Mens Singles Champion Dave Cole, ably assisted by Rik James, John Andrews, Andy Wadling, Michael Andrews and Paul Taylor.
Saturday saw Colchester field Dave, Rik and Andy play against Clacton A and with Dave being taken all the way Clacton As number 1 Gary Young, eventually winning 11-5 in the fifth and Dave and Rik being pushed all the way to 11-2 in the fifth in the doubles Colchester came away with an impressive 9-1 victory and the intent was set. Colchester kept the same team in their other Saturday fixture against a very strong Braintree side, with Colchester League players Steve Kerns and Paul Davison taking the top two spots and the evergreen veteran Hamish Innes taking the third place spot a tough tussle and probable title decider looked in the offing. Dave was first to the table and beat Braintrees number two Davison three straight, then an intriguing battle was next with Andy losing to Braintrees number 1 Steve Kerns this looked like the pattern of the match to follow. Colchester realised that this was the match they has to win if they had any aspirations of winning this prestigious event, they then went on a match winning run winning the next six straight games on the trot for an unassailable 7-1 lead, Braintree won the last two matches but a 7-3 win for Colchester was just what the doctor ordered setting up the action for Sunday. |

On Sunday Colchester change their squad completely and the first game on against Clacton B saw John, Michael and Paul completely run the show running out 10-0 winners and Colchester kept with the same team again to guide them to a victory over Harlow to give them the title and it was Sundays star man Paul Taylor from the St Marys West Bergholt who remained unbeaten against Harlow to lead Colchester to a 7-3 win over Harlow although Michaels 11-9 win over Harlows number 3 was a highly charged games with the match score delicately placed with a 5-3 lead to Colchester was possibly the match winner. Near neighbours Braintree were runners up but the title of Essex Mens Inter-League Champions for 2004/05 goes to Colchester and District Table Tennis League.
